Is there a way to substitute staight knitting needles for circular ones?
Q. It seems like everything is made on circular needles, and I like to knit on straight needles. Is there some magic trick to converting circular ones to straight ones?

A. It depends on what you are knitting. Very wide projects can be split into panels and later sewn together, since straight needles do not easily accommodate wide widths. Anything knit flat on circular needles (back and forth) can be knit on straights. Circular projects can also be knit on straight needles by breaking them up into panels and adding seaming stitches to either edge (one per edge). The difficulty here is that if your pattern is written in the round you have to convert the reverse side row stitches appropriately which may be more work than you are willing to do. You can also knit even very large round projects on dpns, if you have enough of them, although there are still some manufacturers out there who still make 12" dpns,… [cont.]

What type of needles fit an old Singer 99k sewing machine?
Q. I am looking to buy some needles for denim sewing. The ones that I have found say that they are Flat sided Standard Fit 130/705H. Will they fit my 1927 machine? I have looked at the current needle and one side is straight, I am not sure if this means it is flat sided. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I plan to use the machine quite alot and need to know what to buy. Thanks.

A. Yup. It's what I use in mine. AKA Singer 2020 or 15x1 needle system. Size 10 for lightweight fabrics, like a light shirting, 12 for heavier shirtings and light skirt/pantsweight, 14 for pantsweight, 16 for heavy denims, coatings, etc. Have you got a manual for it? Can I use regular straight needles in a pattern for double pointed needles?
Q. I am making mittens or gloves (I haven't decided yet) and don't know how to use double pointed needles but all the two needle patterns look ugly and like something I would never in a million years wear. So I was wondering if I could use straight needles on a dbpn pattern. Will it come out the same or will it look different?

A. No, you really need the double point ones as you have to knit at both ends when making gloves & socks etc.
